Perhaps the most pressing danger to our republic is Islamic terror. The media and the political left have caused this insidious blight to be viewed through the prism of political correctness.  Therefore, there is little understanding and not enough concern.  We must have the discipline to blast through this tripe and get to the truth.  When the truth is held aloft, the people will see it, even through the cloud of PC and misinformation.  Colonel Allen West is calling attention to the PC nonsense by engaging in it with a little humor. He has responded to those who call people “Islamophobic” for criticizing radical Islam.  He has invented the word “Islamapologist” to describe those “who would shift the blame for Islamic terrorism, or who want to instill self-censorship in those who define this savage and barbaric enemy.”  We can at least dream that the PC’ers will see the folly of their behavior.

We were recently treated to a speech/sermon from the President at the annual National Prayer Breakfast.  Obama lectured us about the danger of “getting on our high horse” when criticizing the behavior of ISIS.  He reminded us that many terrible things have been done in the name of Christianity.  He is correct, but his ignorance was displayed when he erroneously compared the raping and selling of children, beheading, etc., to the Inquisition and the Crusades. The Inquisition was basically a secular exercise; royal families were lethally responding to their subjects who had difficulty recognizing the “divine right” to govern. The Crusades were religiously based responses from European representatives to the alarming encroachment into Europe by Muslims, and were strikingly similar to traditional war.

Obama should have made the comparison to the activities of Spanish Conquistadors and the Catholic Church in Central and South America in the 16th century.  Some historians claim that more than 90% of the native population was wiped out, generally for refusing to convert to Christianity. There are two flaws in Obama’s “enlightening” discourse:

[1] Although he refuses to link ISIS to Islam, he is comfortable linking European religiously oriented behavior to Christianity.

[2] Since the 16th century Christianity has evolved into a civilized and peaceful religion while Islam operates as if we still live in the 8th century.

However, the Muslim problem does not only lie with radical Islam.  There is also the historical inability or refusal of “moderate” Muslims to address heinous radical reality.  Consider the words of Sir Winston Churchill, in Volume 2 of his work, The River War, published in 1899:

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!  Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.  The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.  No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.  Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

So we see from an impeccable source that the refusal of “moderate” Muslims to respond to their blood-thirsty brethren is a historic situation.  During the 116 years since Churchill’s words were written a significant happening is that Christianity no longer shelters our civilization against radical Islam.  Secular-progressives have attacked Christianity at every opportunity while simultaneously embracing and rationalizing religious barbarism.

Charles Krauthammer has suggested that Obama is “disengaged.”  Other observers have labeled the President as ignorant and/or aloof.  Still others identify him as an insane and delusional liar.  What he is -is underestimated! He is totally engaged.  Although he most certainly is a liar, he is not delusional.  He may be insane, but he is definitely cognizant.  He does not believe that the recent events in the Middle East are necessarily things that have gone wrong.  Obama repeatedly declares "The US is not, and will never be, at war with Islam."  One more time:  “If one assumes Obama is a Muslim, many things are better explained.”

For example, he has no problem with Iran becoming nuclear.  This stupid diplomatic dance with Iran is merely a two-way stalling tactic.  Stalling has always been what Iran does when “negotiating.”  Obama understands that and is a participant.  Until we realize who Obama really is, we will continue down the road to oblivion.  Assuming his plan is not interrupted, the only question is whether, in two years, he can accomplish his socialist Muslim intent to become a dictator over a diminished America.

Leonard Pitts touched on the subject in a recent editorial.  Mr. Pitts gets it right so seldom that there is a compelling and reflexive urge to quote him when he does:

There is something in free people that instinctively rebels against being told what they cannot do, something that requires them to do the banned thing – not because they need or want to do it, but as an act of self-assertion.  So if you want to protect Islam from insult, the worst thing you can do is ban insults to Islam.

Pitts is referring to the fearsome allegiance to independence that has traditionally characterized the American people.  We must rediscover the courage to display this allegiance and the discipline to properly but powerfully demand that independence be protected.

But to what end? TLC has asserted that there is nothing in the Middle East that is worth the loss of another single drop of American blood. The view here is that the Muslim world should be “quarantined.”  No money, no trade and no “boots on the ground.”  Really get behind Israel and deal with Iran in direct proportion to that country’s behavior.  When a Middle Eastern nation defies tradition and shows the courage to actually fight the horror of ISIS the USA should immediately provide all the weaponry, munitions and supplies necessary to see that the strategy is successful.  King Abdullah of Jordan has forcefully responded to ISIS and asks for our help.  Obama is waffling. We must stop wondering why. The contrast between the two leaders is clear and informative, but it is also embarrassing.

A recent Mallard Fillmore comic strip had the following script:  “The world just ended, but, more importantly; let’s just hope there’s no anti-Muslim backlash.”   Although funny, this language is a sad illustration of what our citizens on the left deem to be important.  We must steadfastly work to re-establish appropriate values within ourselves and others.  Let the work begin in me.

May our Fathers who walked with pilgrim’s feet
Walk with us on the road.
May our Mothers who served with loving hands
Stretch out our hands to serve.
May our Founders who strove with passionate hearts
Open our hearts to truth.
May you see the face of Liberty in everyone you meet
And may everyone you meet see the face of Liberty in you.

Jefferson and the barbary pirates

Muslim pirates of the past: Most Americans are unaware of the fact that over two hundred years ago the United States declared war on Islam. Thomas Jefferson led the charge!

At the height of the eighteenth century, Muslim pirates were the terror of the Mediterranean and a large area of the North Atlantic. They attacked every ship in sight, and held the crews for exorbitant ransoms. These extortionists of the high seas represented the Islamic nations of Tripoli, Tunis, Morocco, and Algiers – collectively referred to as the Barbary Coast – and presented a dangerous and unprovoked threat to the new American Republic.

In July of 1785, Algerian pirates captured American ships, and the Dye of Algiers demanded an unheard-of ransom of $60,000. It was a plain and simple case of extortion, and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson was vehemently opposed to any further payments.  Instead, he proposed to Congress the formation of a coalition of allied nations who together could force the Islamic states into peace.  A disinterested Congress decided to pay the ransom.

In 1786, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams met with Tripoli’s ambassador to Great Britain to ask by what right his nation attacked American ships and enslaved American citizens and why Muslims held so much hostility towards America.  Tripoli’s ambassador answered that Islam "was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Quran that it was their right and duty to make war upon [sinners] wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Muslim who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise."

Despite this stunning admission of premeditated violence on non-Muslim nations, as well as the objections of notable American leaders such as George Washington, for the following fifteen years, the American government paid the Muslims millions of dollars for the safe passage of American ships or the return of American hostages. The payments in ransom and tribute amounted to over twenty percent of the United States government annual revenues in 1800.

Jefferson was disgusted. Shortly after his being sworn in as the third President of the United States in 1801, the Pasha of Tripoli sent him a note demanding the immediate payment of $225,000 plus $25,000 a year for every year forthcoming.

That changed everything. Jefferson let the Pasha know, in no uncertain terms, what he could do with his demand.  The Pasha responded by declaring war on the United States. Tunis, Morocco, and Algiers immediately followed suit.  Jefferson dispatched a squadron of frigates to the Mediterranean and taught the Muslim nations of the Barbary Coast a lesson they would never forget.

Congress authorized Jefferson to empower U.S. ships to seize all vessels and goods of the Pasha of Tripoli and to “cause to be done all other acts of precaution or hostility as the state of war would justify”.  When Algiers and Tunis, who were both accustomed to American cowardice and acquiescence, saw the newly independent United States had the will to strike back, they quickly abandoned their allegiance to Tripoli.  The “Barbary Pirates” were defeated after four years of fighting.  The bravery of the U.S. Marine Corps in these wars led to the line “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Hymn, and they would forever be known as “leathernecks” for the leather collars of their uniforms, designed to prevent their heads from being cut off by the Muslim scimitars when boarding enemy ships.

America had a tradition of religious tolerance. Jefferson, himself had coauthored the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, but fundamentalist Islam was like no other religion the world had ever seen.  A religion based on supremacism, a religion whose holy book not only condoned but mandated violence against unbelievers was unacceptable to him. His greatest fear was that someday this brand of Islam would return and pose an even greater threat to the United States.

This should bother every American.  Muslims have brought about women-only classes at taxpayer-funded universities.  Christians, Jews and Hindus have been banned from serving on juries where Muslim defendants are being judged, piggy banks and Porky Pig tissue dispensers have been banned from workplaces because they offend Islamist sensibilities.  Ice cream has been discontinued at certain Burger King locations because the picture on the wrapper looks similar to the Arabic script for Allah and certain public schools are pulling pork from their menus.

Its death by a thousand cuts and most Americans have no idea that this battle is being waged every day across America.  By allowing groups to obfuscate what is really happening, and not insisting that the Islamists adapt to our own culture, the United States is cutting its own throat with a politically correct knife, and helping to further the Islamists agenda. Sadly, it appears that today’s America would rather be politically correct than victorious.   Wake up America and the world.

                   CHANGE IS COMING

It’s true that the last few weeks of Congress have perfectly represented everything that is wrong with Washington. But change is coming.  The era of passing legislative behemoths, written in secret via a process that includes lobbyists but excludes the American people, is coming to an end.

The month of December is always a joyous time as we gather with friends and family to celebrate the miracle of Christmas, reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the year ahead. And I believe that this year, for the first time in a long time, Americans can look to Washington, D.C., — so often an object of mistrust and dismay — as a source of hope and optimism about our future.

The final weeks of the 113th Congress followed what has become a sad and predictable pattern: Several massive bills were cobbled together secretly by a small collection of political and economic insiders and then hastily forced through Congress before anyone could discover all the special-interest favors tucked inside.

And yet, as we approached the culmination of this miserable process, something remarkable happened.

A small but resolute group of representatives and senators from both sides of the aisle spoke out against this un-republican, undemocratic process. Their numbers began to grow.

Members of both parties — conservatives and liberals — stood up for the American people against a failed status quo that forces those who work hard, play by the rules and live within their means to subsidize political and economic elites who don’t.

And while our bipartisan efforts may have come up short this year, I believe they prove that what we have witnessed these past few weeks represents the last gasping throes of a discredited Washington status quo.

Ten years ago, passing an immense 1,600-page bill that no one had read and no one could amend would not even have been controversial. Five years ago, easy majorities would have been purchased with pork-barrel earmarks. This week, with the full weight of both partys' leaderships, it barely made it over the finish line.

Change comes slowly, as we know. And it comes slowest to those institutions that make the rules.

But change is coming. The era of passing legislative behemoths, written in secret via a process that includes lobbyists but excludes the American people, is coming to an end. The era of big government rigging the rules for big business and big special interests while leaving everyone else behind is coming to an end.

A new era is coming in which Washington will once again be forced to work for the American people instead of the other way around.

The Beltway establishments of both parties are exhausted: out of ideas, and running out of time. Next year, a new unified Congress has an opportunity to reshape the national debate, to challenge Washington’s failing status quo and its failed champion in the Oval Office.

We can finally begin the hard, overdue work of rescuing our economy from the grips of government dysfunction and political privilege; rescuing our health care system from Obamacare; reviving our education system and modernizing our transportation system; fixing our broken immigration system; ending special-interest manipulation of our tax system and reforming regulations to level the playing for small and new businesses.

Next year we can begin to craft a new reform agenda to increase access to and opportunity within America’s middle class. Such an agenda would help grow the economy and take-home pay. It would begin to finally restore mobility and opportunity to working families and communities while putting political and corporate elites back to work for everyone else.

For too long, the working families of and aspiring to America’s middle class have been fighting a lonely battle to keep up and get ahead. And for too long, Washington has been an obstacle, even an opponent, in that fight. That fight will remain uphill, but for the first time in a long time, there is hope. There is a real chance that fight may get a little less steep, a little less lonely. Help is on the way.

It may be hard to see right now, but change is coming. A new Congress is on the way — with new ideas and a new sense of purpose.

Washington may still be broken, but America is ready to fix it. Our opportunity to do so is almost here. For the first time in a long time, help for working families is on the way.

                                  Discipline

                                               By Jim Lyde
                                     Chief Operating Officer

This country has just reached a political position that enables our recently elected leadership to examine the false hope and failed promises we have sustained and develop real plans to move us toward the country our forefathers envisioned.  For this exercise to be successful, old fashioned discipline will be required.

We must we must we MUST be willing to create compromises untainted by politics and driven by honest evaluation within a quest for intelligent solutions.  Agreements reached based on the issues, not getting reelected.  Jefferson’s Declaration that “all men are created equal” led to a nation that could unite only after the horrible state of affairs created by the implementation of the infamous Three Fifths Compromise, which upheld the absolute opposite of equality. This terrible but necessary agreement reaffirmed slavery, set forth a property tax policy on slaves and decreed that a slave was three-fifths of a citizen.  Thank goodness the Constitutional language of this case (Article 1, Section 2) has been obliterated by subsequent amendments, but without the resolution of that issue there may never have been a United States of America.  Progress is still being made toward the complete solution to that abomination, but there can be no better illustration of the need for compromise.

Before Republicans can have standing to influence our neighbors and neighborhoods we should right ourselves and our own houses.  That exercise requires unity.  The division between establishment and conservative Republicans is more vociferous than it should be.   The activities of the Republican Party during the Thad Cochran senatorial runoff in Mississippi were indefensible. How does Senator Cochran now view his mandate, since the national Republican party persuaded liberal Democrats to vote for him over conservative Chris McDaniels, who had just  beaten Cochran in the primary?  One might suppose that the sleazy effort required in that election would give conservatives pause to contemplate how people like Cruz, Paul, Lee and a whole new group of conservatives got elected!   Conversely, how should moderate Republicans feel after conservatives ignored experienced advice and insisted on a strategy that resulted in accusations from across the country that Republicans shut down the government?  Establishment types need to acknowledge and move toward the principles they claim to support and away from their true selfish motives.  Conservatives should move toward the historical legislative methodology that brings success.  Success won not only by adherence to principle, but by way of compromise, with both sides protecting values and moving the effort forward.

For the past six years our nation’s fortunes have been controlled by a highly unlikely merger of conditions: an illogically elected socialist Muslim President whose legislative minions are pseudo-intellectual, mean-spirited sheep.  Until now this union has controlled from two-thirds to all of the government.  Conservatives must abandon the childish personality contests to avoid continuing the current dismal and negative condition.  If this superfluous bickering does not cease, the President will utilize his oratory and his ownership of the national media to prevail in the future.
